Message from the CEO: The program for RCBC’s 41st annual conference in Whistler is shaping up as one of the most interesting and engaging we’ve ever had. Of course we will have presentations to share knowledge and good practices in the topics our members have come to expect. But this year we’re going to provide delegates with some options for engagement in a number of different sessions.

Here’s one example: On the opening afternoon we’ll focus on EPR. First, we’ll get the skinny on some best practices used in other jurisdictions from a keynote speaker. Then we’re going to provide delegates with an opportunity they have never had before: A proactive consultation on three future EPR programs long before those industries start the process of drafting plans. This is your chance to provide insights, suggestions and recommendations on how those programs should be delivered, what the plans should include and what they shouldn't.

After the EPR keynote, those who want to participate will work in small groups to flesh out the does and don’ts for EPR in BC. Our facilitation team will gather that information and compile it for the Ministry of Environment to inform their future process. This will also provide a road map for those soon-to-be formed stewardship agencies so they have the opportunity to create plans with your input woven into the fabric of the new programs.

Think about it. Instead of creating a plan blindly and rolling it out in a public consultation process only to find their best intentions have missed the mark, they will be able to develop a plan based on your experience and insights from the outset. This is your chance to participate in a proactive public consultation process that can make a difference before a new program is even conceived.
